Talk about Tattoo Ideas with Kel!
There is something so powerful about a bold geometric tattoo design. Coupled with pointillism, and the perfect accentuation of the specific body part, you have the beautiful work of Kel Reid.
Get to Know Kel:
What made you want to be a tattoo artist or when did you decide?
i’ve wanted to tattoo since 8th grade when the idea presented itself in a school computer class about careers. it took a long time to get where i am, but i’ve worked hard and i’m glad i’m here now.
What’s your background? How did you get started?
i never did a standard apprenticeship. i came up more outlaw than anything just due to lack of knowledge where i grew up. though once i landed into the right path in a shop it was really great from there on.
the idea of tattooing came tangible through a friends dad who tattooed, and doing hand pokes on my friends.
it took me years after that to get started into a more professional environment. no shops wanted to apprentice me and honestly i didn’t know much about tattooing. i eventually gave up and just started to teach myself.
What styles do you specialize in or prefer to work on?
i would say i specialize in a stylized version of geometric work. varying with line work and dotwork or stipple style of applying designs. i love a lot of heavier black and bold line work.
What are your tattoo goals? What kind of pieces do you love working on? What would you love to do more of?
my goals with tattooing right now are to continue to build a solid portfolio, i also want to continue to travel and see different places while tattooing everywhere i can while keeping things interesting.
right now i’d love to do more large scale pieces. arm and leg sleeves, torsos. it all sounds fun.
anything that will help me stay challenged and focused.
Are there any tattoo requests you turn down?
the only ideas i’d ever turn away would be an idea that i think another artist would do more efficiently than myself or anything i wouldn’t feel confident in doing.
6.Who’s your ideal client?
i dont know that i have an exact ideal client, i do enjoy working with clients who know what they want, can sit well for long periods of time and who understand and trust the process.
7.Do you have any advice for the first-timer?
i would say just do your research and know what you want and who you want to do it. it’s important to explore your options and find the right shop and artist to work with.
i think that looking ahead at the bigger picture if you plan to be heavily covered is super important as well. i’ve done a lot of pieces and seen a lot of old tattoos that people want covered because they change their minds in the long run.
10.How do we find you on Social Media?
my main tattooing page is my instagram account. you can find that under the
