Get to Know Shane:
What made you want to be a tattoo artist?
I wanted to be a tattoo artist when I saw my step dad start tattooing people in our house. We were both artists before hand. We both pained with acrylics.
What’s your background?
I started to draw and paint when I was in Youth Authority around the age of 13. It became my daily escape from the world I was in and it was my outlet. I felt safe when my mind was wrapped into every piece I was doing. I got started tattooing with my step dad when I got out of Youth Authority when I was 18. However my mother didn’t approve, so I moved away to Orange County California. I was 18 years old and no body wanted a young kid to come in and further saturate the industry. I had to fight my way into this industry against all odds and people who didn’t want me around.
What styles do you specialize in or prefer to work on?
I Specialize in Traditional, Neotraditional, and Black and grey.
What are your tattoo goals?
My goals in my career are to travel, and share my art with other people and fellow artists. Ideally I would like to get to a place where people come to me for large original pieces, and further developing my style.
Are there any requests that you turn down?
I tend to turn down specialized lettering pieces as well as color realism.
How do you work with your clients?
I am very personal with my clients. My priority is to make the experience just as spectacular as their tattoo.
Who is your ideal client?
My ideal client is one who has a general idea and lots of space for me just to get creative with the design.
Do you have advice for first timers?
My advice is to do you research!!! Have an idea and have an artist who is willing to come up with something great for you!
What makes Diego Tattoo Studio the best tattoo shop in San Diego?
The AMAZING people who work there!!! It is very rare to be in a shop with people who work with each other and not have to deal with egotistical artists!
